Important Shipping Update: What the End of the USPS® and UPS® SurePost Contract Means for You
As of January 2025, the long-standing partnership between the United States Postal Service and UPS has come to an end, impacting businesses that rely on SurePost services. Here's what you need to know about the changes and how they may affect your operations.
Key Changes to SurePost Deliveries
The first major change is that SurePost deliveries to P.O. Boxes and APO/FPO addresses are no longer possible through UPS. This means if you were using UPS for deliveries to those locations, you'll need to switch to another service.
Additionally, UPS has raised rates on SurePost packages. Packages weighing between 1 and 10 lbs now cost nearly 10% more and packages over 10 lbs will cost about 6% more. Surcharges on rural deliveries have also risen, making it more expensive to ship to less populated areas. It may be time to rethink your shipping strategy.
What this Means for Your Shipments
-
Higher Shipping Costs: Be prepared for price increases, particularly for rural deliveries. These costs could quickly add up and affect your bottom line.
-
Switching Delivery Options: If you previously used UPS for P.O. Box or AP/FPO addresses, you'll need to find alternative shipping methods. These areas are also affected: Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. territories, and Puerto Rico. Please note that other UPS delivery options will still be available to those areas.
-
Faster Delivery Through UPS: As a result of the contract ending, packages may arrive earlier than before, with transit times ranging from two to six days instead of two to seven.
Be sure to stay on top of new delivery and rate structures. Consider exploring other services or negotiating new contracts to minimize the impact.
