U.S. Postal Service Announces New Pricing for 2021

October 22, 2020
Author: Demetri Smith

Attention Mailers: The USPS officially filed its proposed price changes with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) on October 9. The changes are scheduled to take effect on January 24, 2021.

If approved, the new prices would mean a rate increase on some mail products, but no increase in the stamp price.

How much are the rates increasing?

The new prices from the USPS include an average increase for mailing product services of 1.8%, with an increase of 1.5% for other categories.

What rate changes should my business be aware of?

If you're sending first-class letters or postcards, as of now nothing is changing. However, metered letters will increase from .50 to .51 cents and domestic postcards will go from .35 to .36 cents. Additional letter ounces will increase also going from .15 to .20 cents.

Why are the rates changing?

The USPS states that the mailing services price increase is generally based on the consumer price index, but International Shipping Services prices are being adjusted to help the postal service maintain competitiveness in the market. According to the USPS, "The governors believe these new rates will keep the Postal Service competitive while providing the agency with needed revenue."

It's important to remember that the Postal Service has some of the lowest postage rates on letters in the world and continues to offer customers ways to save on shipping. Unlike some other shippers, the Postal Service does not add surcharges for fuel, residential delivery, or regular Saturday delivery.

"The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations."

As we get more updates on the USPS rates for 2021, we will be sure to update those who it will affect the most, our valued customers. Be sure to visit and bookmark our Postage Rate Hub for more information.
