Forever and a Penny: The Stamp Price Increase

We’ve heard a lot this year about the possibility of a higher stamp price, and even wrote about some of the implications and possible rationale behind this decision in our previous blog posts, The Stamp Price Power Play and A Penny For Your Postage?.

The price increase we’ve all been talking about will become a reality with next rate change that will take effect on Sunday, January 21, 2018. The price of a forever stamp will increase from 49 cents to 50 cents to bolster First-Class Mail, which has seen a dip in demand as opposed to the double-digit growth of the package business. So what does this mean? Although the price is going up a penny, there are still opportunities to save.

The USPS® has maintained the 3 cent postage meter discount, with a new meter rate of 47 cents to take effect on January 21, 2018. Those savings can add up and the benefits are numerous:
  • You’ll no longer need to waste time travelling to the Post Office and standing in line
  • Built-in scales mean you’ll never over- or under-pay for postage
  • Postage funds are safe in your meter; there’s no risk of loss or theft (like with physical stamp inventory)
